The undefeated Excelsior College squad
Excelsior College Football Academy is celebrating league title glory in its first year as a football academy.
The team remained undefeated in a superb season which saw the players win four games and draw their other two fixtures.
A potent attack and solid defence ensured Excelsior topped the third division of the Under 19 Newcastle Schools League – pitting them against opposition from schools in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland.
Kris Glenwright, PE teacher and Excelsior College Football Academy Head Coach, said: “This is the first year we have set up a football academy structure in Excelsior College and to be crowned league champions has surpassed our targets for the season.
“Working so closely with many of the squad has paid dividends, making significant progress both academically and personally.
“As a player within the football academy, students have the opportunity to study BTEC Level 3 Sport and play football within their working week.
“Monitoring the development of the players throughout the academic year on a weekly basis has allowed timely intervention both on the pitch and in the classroom – all with the focus on winning more games than we lose and achieving the highest possible grades in each of their respective subjects.
“We’ve exceeded our targets on the pitch so let’s hope for the same success in the summer.
“Congratulations to all the students who represented the college football academy this year.”
