Talented Excelsior Academy pupils achieved the school’s best ever GCSE results on a day of unprecedented success.
Attainment and progress are at the highest ever levels at the Newcastle school with 68% of pupils achieving A* to C grades in Maths and more than half of students taking English scoring A* to C grades.
The English results are all the more remarkable as for around 50% of Excelsior pupils, English is their second language.
Outstanding results on the day included Ryan Dornan, 16, who gained four A* grades in Maths, Geography, Science and History, as well as five As.
His GCSE performance heralds an exciting new chapter in his life. Ryan, from Scotswood, is off to study at Merchiston Castle School for boys in Edinburgh, courtesy of a bursary from Excelsior Academy sponsor Lord Laidlaw.
“I’m pleased with the results I’ve got, I didn’t think I’d do that well,” said Ryan. “I’ve been to Merchiston for a two day visit, it was really good and I’ll be boarding there.
“My friends and family are pleased that I’ll be going there, they’re a bit sad that I’ll be leaving them for while but I’ll be coming back down for holidays.”
Fammi Khanom, 16, from Elswick, is looking towards a career as a doctor after superb results saw her achieve eight A grades and an A* in Further Additional Science.
“I’m very happy, I did lots of work after school and I came into school on Saturdays and during the holidays to work on my English, Geography and History,” said Fammi.
“I want to be a doctor. My grandad was ill and to see the doctors giving him medication and the way they have helped him, I really want to be able to help people like that.”
Other notable successes included Mohammed Miah who scored two A*s in Maths and Spanish and three As, which have set him on the road towards a career in accountancy.
And 16-year-old Dimitar Petleshkov is eyeing a career as a PE teacher after securing an A* in History and two As in Spanish and Maths.
Phil Marshall, Excelsior Academy Executive Principal, said: “Last year’s results placed Excelsior as one of the highest performing secondary schools in the North East when comparing the progress and attainment of pupils from the same starting points – this year’s results are even better.
“The pupils have achieved a record number of A*, A and B grades. In English, 52% of the children have gained A* to C grades, which is all the more remarkable given that for over half of our pupils, English is their second language.
“The hard work of the pupils, combined with the outstanding work of our teachers to support them, has resulted in today’s superb GCSE performance.”
