Nikita Mills celebrates her award with Donna Harrison (left) and Anna Wallbanks
Former Excelsior College student Nikita Mills has been hailed as one of the most inspirational young people in the North East.
Care and concern for others landed Nikita a Streetwise Newcastle Inspirational Young Person Award at a glittering ceremony in the Wylam Brewery, Exhibition Park, Newcastle.
Nikita is one of just 25 young people in the region to scoop an inspirational award – which mark the 25th anniversary of the Streetwise Newcastle charity which helps change the lives of thousands of young people, supporting them to realise their aspirations.
Excelsior College Pupil Welfare Manager Donna Harrison nominated Nikita for her prize.
“Nikita has truly excelled at Excelsior, growing into an amazing and inspirational young woman,” said Donna.
“Over her two years in college she has trained to be a youth mentor, working with young people in the community to overcome their difficulties.
“She has worked part-time to save for a once-in-a-lifetime four week trip to Thailand; she worked on the Erasmus project, leaving the country for the first time in her life to visit Holland; and most importantly she has supported a number of students with self-esteem issues.
“She always has a smile; Nikita is known for her gracious attitude and is often heard saying “this is the best day ever!”
Nikita was shortlisted in the awards from hundreds of nominations and was invited to attend the ceremony with Donna and Anna Wallbanks, Excelsior College UCAS Advisor/Progress Tutor.
She is now off to study at York St John University to train as a counsellor as part of her determination to continue her support of others.
Donna added: “It was an honour to celebrate with Nikita and see her recognised for her hard work and personal development.
“We were one of only four schools to nominate a student and the only school to attend and support their student, which led to a number of professionals commenting on the excellent support they know Excelsior offers its students.
“Hopefully Nikita is the first of many students we can nominate as we have so many amazing young people studying with us.”
